Kindergarten Day
April 21st is Kindergarten Day. In St. Louis, the first American kindergarten opened in 1873. This type of class first opened in 1837 in Germany. This day celebrates the birth of its creator, Friedrich Froebe. At first, it was in an on again, off again state in that country.
I still remember my kindergarten days. We had a piano in the room and some of the kids used to get into trouble for banging on the keys when we put on our coats to go outside. I remember the teacher taking us outside to the gated playground which had a slide, a sandbox, and concrete on which we rode tricycles.
The teacher would get these from a locked storage space build into the side of the huge classroom. The only time we did not go outside to play was when it was raining. Years later, this huge kindergarten had a makeover. All the big beautiful windows were taken out. Framework and boards suddenly took their place.
They ended up bricking it all up and small windows were put in place near the ceiling. The kindergarten of my past was transformed into the school library. All of the students in the school now visit the school library at least once a week. I go back there every now and again and can still picture myself as a child playing in the kindergarten playground.
Do you remember your first day of school and some of your classmates?
