Well, it is finally finished… managed to sew up a WataMote comic con costume from scratch for one of my kids who is a huge anime/manga fan. She usually attends the comic con every year and has done so for about 6 years. At one time, her costumes were bought but the last few years she has decided to make them, or have Mom make them for her. Last years attempt at a pleated skirt did not turn out so well, I mean it lasted for one night and took a couple of weeks to get together. Not that it wasn’t a great outfit, it was. However, there is only so much a glued together skirt can handle. That’s right, last years skirt was put together with a couple of stitches and a glue gun.
This year she chose to dress up as Watamote and picked up some light yellow fabric for the pleated skirt and jacket as well as a wine colored material for the tie. Oh, I almost forgot, she also got herself a black wig that she cut and styled with hair glue and hair spray. Her construction style boot quickly donned a roll top make from a black t-shirt that she purchased. A white blouse completed her outfit.
I hope she takes a lot of pictures of people dressed up. I remember one year she went as Princess Peach, her absolutely fav game character….Wonder who she is going to meet this year?
She has met Stan Lee at a past comic con and even hosted an interview at her school with voice actor Linda Ballantyne who has lends her voice in Sailor Moon as Sailor Moon and Serena. She has used her voice talents in many other venues both for television and stage. This year she is going to be at the Comic Con representing herself as the voice character for Champ Bear a character in The Care Bears.
I have found memories of The Care Bears, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ballz (goku was my fav)… and I have a Tuxedo Max doll in one of the boxes in the spare room. I remember when I first showed her my Tuxedo Max doll.. and all I heard was “Mommy can I play/have Tuxedo Max?” Of course you can’t I would say. You can have a look and then I would safely place him back in the box.
We had a laugh about it this week as we were working far into the night on her Watamote costume… she said to me… Remember when you would not let me play with your Tuxedo Max doll.. yeah… Well, I’m glad you didn’t. Why are you saying that? Well… I did get a hold of your Sailor Moon doll and I chopped off her hair. 🙂  And years later, I hear about it.
Anyhow, here is where you can view an image of Watamote….. and one of my kids in character in a costume we made from scratch without a pattern.
What was your favorite cartoon or superhero character and have you ever dressed up as one of them?
