How to Swaddle Your Baby the Right Way
Swaddling your baby is a technique that involves wrapping your baby in a blanket. There are several reasons that moms choose to swaddle their baby including to provide warmth, to provide security, to calm the baby down and to keep the baby from being startled by their own startle reflex.
It is important that you swaddle your baby the correct way. Improper swaddling may lead to hip dysplasia. This is caused by wrapping the baby’s legs tightly in the blanket. This action can loosen the joints as well as damage the hip socket’s soft cartilage. To ensure this doesn’t occur, you need to be sure there is ample room at the bottom of the blanket so that your baby can move their legs around.
In order to swaddle a baby, all you need is a blanket. The blanket should be big enough so that it can securely wrap around your baby. To correctly swaddle your baby, first lay the blanket out on a flat surface so that it resembles a diamond shape.
Then, fold down the top corner about five inches so it forms a straight edge. Place your baby on their back and ensure the top of the blanket is even with the baby’s shoulders. Be sure the left arm of your baby is down straight and pull the bottom left side corner of the blanket over their arm and chest.
Then, tuck the edge of the blanket underneath his back on the right side. Be sure that the baby’s right arm is down straight and do the opposite of what you did for the left side. Then, just fold the lower blanket end and loosely tuck it in back of your baby.
Be sure that your baby is able to move their hips and spread out their legs with no problems.
