Sun Safety Tips– When spending time outdoors in the summer sun, be sure to lather everyone up with sunscreen that has an SPF of 15 or higher and reapply it every two hours. Also, for added sun protection, when around the water, wear a hat and sunglasses.
Heat Safety Tips– Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are possibilities in the summer. To avoid these, be sure everyone stays hydrated by drinking plenty of water before going outside. Once outdoors, drink water every 20-30 minutes and wear clothing that feature light colors in order to reflect the sun’s heat. Also, avoid strenuous activities when the sun is at its hottest, usually starting around noontime, peaking at about 3:00 pm in the Eastern time zone.
Pool Safety Tips– Anytime children are in or around the pool area, there should be a minimum of one adult present, preferable one that knows CPR. If you have a pool at your home, you should have a fence completely around it and the fence should be a minimum of four feet in height. Young children should also use a life vest while in the pool.
Tick Safety Tips– Summer seems to be a thriving time for ticks. Ticks carry an array of diseases including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease. When the family is outdoors for any length of time, be sure to use bug repellent to protect everyone from ticks. Also, when out in the woods, ensure that everyone wears the appropriate clothing like long sleeve shirts and pants that are tucked inside the socks. At the end of the day, check everyone in the family for ticks.
