Tomato Chickpea Fish Curry/Choca – Recipes

Share

I made this dinner the other day and thought to share it with you all. It is quite versatile and can be used to have over rice, with roti, or even bread. It is slightly spicy, and the trick is to add only enough spices that you and your family can withstand.

Have a look at it and then try out the recipe. It can be adjusted according to your own taste.

Ingredients;

2 onions, finely chopped
1 tomato, chopped
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tsp each of salt and pepper
4 small potatoes, washed and quartered
1 tsp cumin
half a pot spoon of curry powder
oil

Method;

1. Brown garlic, onion, tomatoes in a little oil. Add cumin, salt and pepper, and curry powder. Add enough oil to make a paste. Then, add 2 cans of drained chick peas, add quartered potatoes. Add enough water just to cover the top. Simmer in a covered frypan, or saucepot. When potatoes are starting to feel a little soft, add either one can of red sockeye salmon, or even a whole filet of salmon or any type of boneless white fish.

2. Cook until potatoes are soft.

This meal can be eaten over brown or white rice, with bread or even roti.

And if you do not want to add fish, you can use any type of beef instead (other than ground beef)

Or if you prefer to go vegetarian, you can also make a cauliflower curry, eggplant curry, or even just a potato curry that tastes almost as good.

Another type of dish that I make sometimes, although I do not have a picture is made with boneless salt cod fish, tomatoes, garlic, onion and lots of potatoes.

What you need for this dish is about 5 to 10 lbs of potatoes (depending on the size of your family) peeled, boiled and mashed. Salt fish that has been soaked in cold water overnight and rinsed with fresh water quite steadily to remove the access salt. Drain the water off of the fish, flake into pieces and add to pan with cut up tomatoes, onions and garlic. Add enough oil and cook until onions, garlic, tomatoes are soft, and fish is no longer transparent. Do not drain off the oil.

When done, add the fish mixture to the boiled, mashed potatoes and mix together until soft. Add more oil, if the mixture is a little clumpy. This meal is normally eaten with roti, but you can also eat it with homemade bakes (not the sweet ones though)
