Tide Pooling Treasures

When it is low tide on the coast, tide pooling treasures can be found. A tide pool is a collection of rocks at the seashore that are alive with all sorts of marine life. They can only be seen though when the tide goes out, and low tide lets you see the wonders under the sea. There is nothing quite like seeing starfish in shades of purple or bright orange to a fuschia pink within a few feet of each other. Check out your local coastal tide charts and when you see Low Tide know that you are in for some great tide pooling treasures.

On the tops of the tide pool rocks you might notice a sea of mussels. Attached to the rocks under the water are walls of clams and oysters. If you are lucky while you are out tide pooling you might find the rare abalones that can be up to 10 inches in length! Check with your area to see if you are allowed to gather the mussels, clams, or oysters. If you are, it makes a great activity for the kids to do in the morning so you can cook them up for dinner.

When you take the kids out tide pooling see how many different species they can find. Do they notice the different anemones? If the water is shallow enough, have them lightly touch the anemone. It is sticky to the touch and the anemone will close up right away.

Sea urchins are great to hunt for! You might be lucky to see a wall of them. They dig out softball-size holes in the rock to fit right into. They look all pokey and will leave teeny tiny pricks in your hand if you are lucky enough to hold one.
