The Pros and Cons of Breastfeeding Toddlers
We all know the benefits of breastmilk for babies. However, when breastfeeding goes beyond the first year, some people will say its fine while others don’t approve of the practice at all. Breastfeeding toddlers is something that is quite common in some countries. However, in the United States, some have a dim view of it because of self-sufficiency and independence. There are pros and cons when it comes to breastfeeding toddlers.
Pros
The antibodies that are found in breast milk actually help to support the baby’s immune system so they don’t get sick as much. Also, these antibodies also help to lessen the risk of ear infection and respiratory infection.
Breast milk is a great source of nutrition for your baby. While they are more than likely eating solid foods at this point, breast milk adds to their nutritional diet. Breast milk provides your toddler with vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat.
Toddlers that are still being breastfed enjoy a relaxing and calm experience. It can greatly help your toddler deal with stress and emotions such as fear.
Cons
One of the biggest downsides to breastfeeding toddlers is that they have teeth. Really nothing needs to be said more than that but it’s something you didn’t have to worry about when they were infants. While biting may or may not be common with your child, even if it is not you may still get a dental graze once in a while.
Toddlers that breastfed tend to be more demanding and more vocal, which causes problems at times, especially out in public. Toddlers don’t care where they are when they want to nurse and will tug at your shirt or even lift your shirt right up.
Of course, breastfeeding your toddler makes you more susceptible to comments, opinions and criticism. Sometimes it may not even be a stranger that says something to you but a close friend or family member. You will hear all types of negative things like if they can walk, they should no longer nurse or they will be spoiled by nursing at such an older age.
Whether you are breastfeeding a newborn or a toddler, there are certain foods you should avoid while breastfeeding!
