Rewarding Children for Doing Household Chores
Many parents offer an incentive for doing chores. Rewarding children for doing household chores seems to be the norm. Rewards are often giving for completing tasks. Things such as prizes, gifts, money, or even an extended bedtime during the weekend are part of the reward for getting the job done. One must decide whether rewarding a child for doing chores is right or wrong.
One important thing to remember is to stick to rewards when giving themĀ something for a job well done. Offering money for doing chores is common in some households. However, it will give the child the belief that they are entitled to it.
Teach your child from a young age that there are certain responsibilities that they have to do. Responsibilities such as putting away their toys and/or keeping their bedroom somewhat tidy is something that they need to be taught. Teach them that cleaning up at regular intervals will mean that they will not have to spend hours to clean it all up.
Set a good example for your child to follow. Getting rid of items that you no longer need or want will help to eliminate the clutter about the house. It is also important that you clearly define what chore you want them to do. Do not just say go clean up your room as they may fiddle around and make some changes but may not pinpoint the area or thing that you want to be put away.
Remember to praise them for a job well done. By doing so, they will be less reluctant to do the task daily or weekly. If you choose to reward your child for doing chores, decide on the reward and be consistent.
