Quilting Day
March 15th is Quilting Day. Many of our grandmothers, great grandmothers and those before them used to do needlework to make clothing, bedding and home decor. Quilting bees were common in many communities. The womenfolk would make something to take along for everyone to snack on and take along her quilting supplies as well. The afternoon was spent working on their quilts and sharing news about their family and home life.
These handmade quilts cost quite a lot of money to purchase in today’s prices. Some religious communities still make their quilts by hand. I still have an old quilt in my home. It has not worn out yet and is quite cozy and warm. It is done in the log pattern and is in a mint green and a pea green color with flecks of red.
The one pictured above is one of my favorite patterns. Nowadays, handmade quilts are usually given as a wedding present and is considered a heirloom piece. On quilting day, take into account all of the time, dedication, and the love of the craft that is in each stitch.
