Potato Chip Day

March 14th is Potato Chip Day. This is America’s #1 snack food. It is thought to have originated back in the 1800’s when a patron of a restaurant did not like how the ones he was served tasted. He thought that they were too thick and mushy. The chef not wanting a dissatisfied customer, quickly headed back to the grill and started a new order.

However, this time he cut it very thin, and fried it, When it was done, he topped it with salt and served the customer. The customer loved it and this style of thinly and then frying them became very popular. The restaurant continued to make and sell them this way. They were known as Saratoga Chips.

Leominster Potato Chip Company claims to be the first manufacturer of this product in the US. By the 1900’s, this snack food was sold commercially. By the 1950’s, flavored varieties hit the market. They seem to be even more popular than ever before.
