Pick Strawberries Day
May 20th is Pick Strawberries Day. Personally I have never went strawberry picking. The closest I ever got to doing this was by picking the strawberries out of our backyard. Surprisingly it is one of my favorite fruits. Some years ago I use to do down strawberries every year and put them up for the winter when the only ones you got in the supermarket were brought in from other states and quite high in price.
I love the tangy, tart taste of these berries. I used to do them down in sugar but have cut out most sugar from my diet. My kids love when I do them down in sugar and have them on pancakes, ice cream, and crepes.
Our strawberry plant has long given up the ghost. Hubby did not really like the fact that they were very low to the ground and they were food for the slugs. I have tried growing them a couple of times indoors with no luck. I even went as far as getting one of those grow your own strawberry kits. I managed to see a couple of plant shoots from 5 out of the 12 seeds but that is as far as it went. They soon died without ever getting bigger than a pin dot. I seriously mean, if you blinked you could not see them.
The next time we get some fresh ones in I might just put a couple of them in the ground and cover them to see if anything would replant from them. As for eating them now, I love them made into a smoothie with bananas, plain or cut up into a salad.
For those of you who are close to pick your own, I envy you. As for me, I am waiting for our local grocers to restock their supply of strawberries, which will be sometime this week, I hope.
