Lost Dog Awareness Day
April 23rd is Lost Dog Awareness Day. It is a day to remember lost dogs from all over the world. Many communities around the world raise awareness about these lost animals in the hopes that someone will recognize them and return them to their rightful owners.
Flyers are printed and distributed by Lost Dogs of America. Many of these animals do not end up in the shelters because of their diligence. So glad that they have this organization in place. I know how devastating it can be to lose a pet. When I was a child, we lost our family pet. We used to let him go outside to do his business, and back then there was no such thing as leash laws or even dog parks for that matter.
Well, my Mom, Dad and I awaited for our dog to return after dinner. It never happened. Although my Dad did spot him running with some other dogs. Back then, dogs that were found on the street were simply picked up and taken to the local pound and after 2 weeks either euthanized or used for experiments, or so we believed.
My Dad and I would walk to the shelter and back each night in the hopes of Rex being picked up. The shelter was about a 40 minute walk each way but we made a nightly trek, just in case. This went on for about two weeks. Even after all of these years, I still remember the rust and white dog from my childhood.
Pets are family, many years can pass and more often than not you will remember how each and every one of them touched your life somehow.
