International Mountain Day is celebrated Dec 11. It is an event that is organized by the United Nations. They want people to realize how important mountains are from an ecological and economical standpoint.

Mountains cover 1/4 of the world’s surface.
International Mountain Day was designated from 2003.
Approximately 12% of the world’s population live in the mountains.
Mountains have diverse temperatures. Some are ice-capped or tropical rainforests.
People who live in the mountains are at a disadvantage. They lack basic services such as health services and education.
Moving Forward
The UN and The Watershed Management and Mountains Programme hopes to strengthen existing policies, transport and communication so that the natural resources are preserved and the health and welfare of the people living in mountain communities are not at risk.
Improvement of livelihood as well as sustainable development is the forefront of the UN and The Watershed Management and Mountain Programme that is organized every year by the Forestry Dept.
Mountains are beautiful and breathtaking, They have been in existence since the beginning of time. They are an important part of our ecological system and provide shelter, water, and food sources for humans and animals.
