Innovative Ways to Get Children to Help with Chores

As a parent teaching children about responsibility is something that should be done. Assigning various chores is a good place to start. Remember to assign tasks according to age. Do not expect a three year old to vacuum, take out the trash or do the dishes. The most important thing in starting a child off on chore work is to not overburden them and find fun ways to get children to help with chores. Here are some innovative ideas that you may want to incorporate.

How to Make Chore Duty Fun

  1. Stickers- Reward them with stickers for completing the task. Go one step beyond in rewarding them. Hide stickers under knick-knacks, on top of bookcases, dressers, and anywhere else that needs to be dusted. Once they have moved the item to dust, they uncover their reward.
  2. Decorate Buckets- Let them decorate a cleaning bucket in their own style. Children’s markers and stickers will help them turn the buckets into works of art.
  3. Reward Sheets- Have a couple of reward sheets posted in the house. When a child completes a chore, have them check it off. Once it has been checked off reward them with a sticker. They most stickers at the end of the week get a larger sticker for a reward or get to choose the movie for family night, etc.

Innovative Ideas for Chore Assignments

  1. Chore Jar- Make a chore jar out of a can and place several popsicle sticks or tongue depressor sticks in it. Write the task that you wish the child to do, written on this is black marker. Have each child pull one out to find their assigned task.
  2. Chore Board- You could also make a chore board that lists certain chores. Play pin the tail on the donkey, only this time they will be pointing their finger on a chore for them to do.

These are two ways you can make assigning chores less frustrating and more fun. I am sure that you could come up with a few ideas yourself.  The kids will have a great laugh seeing what they have been assigned. And if you really need a particular chore done, write that particular chore on each piece of paper. Whoever pulls it out is assigned that chore.
