How to Start a Conversation

Sometimes, the hardest part about reaching out to others is breaking the ice. You may see someone you want to talk to, but what should you say? We’ve all had moments when we kick ourselves because our opening line falls flat.

Conversation

If you do not know what to say to break the ice, here are some ideas:

Ask About the Other Person’s Interests

If the person has a baby, you could easily compliment the infant or ask how old she is. The same works if the person has a dog with them.

However, if the person is by herself, find other ways to peg her interests. For instance, “I see your wearing the new shoes from X company. How do you like them?” Most people will gladly talk about themselves and their interests.

Ask for Information

Another strategy is to ask for information. Perhaps you ask for directions, if need be, or ask for a restaurant recommendation. As long as the topic is a general one, the person will likely be happy to share information with you. This makes them feel like they are helping you learn something you do not already know.

Talk About Current Events

If you do not think either of the above tactics will work, another one is to talk about current events. Talk about items occurring in your hometown or in the nation. Ask the other person what he thinks about X event. If he is not interested in talking, you will likely get a brief response. Ideally, you will get a thorough answer, which can help you keep the conversation going.

Some people can talk to anyone about anything. For others, striking up a conversation can be more challenging. Try one of these techniques and see if starting a conversation becomes just a bit easier.

What is your favorite strategy for striking up a conversation?
