Sometimes when you are too busy, have no time for a sit down meal, or bored, you reach for a snack. Choosing the right snack is important for many reasons. Empty calories increase weight and sometimes the blood sugar fluctuates. So it’s important that you snack healthy.
Here are a few items that make healthy snack choices-
Fruit is always a good choice. Mixed berries freeze well.
Apples, bananas; any fruit that is in season
Celery sticks
Hard boiled eggs
Small box of raisins
Trail mix
Handful of nuts
Dried fruit
Cucumber slices (salt/pepper, light Italian dressing)
You could also take some healthy crackers, spread some chocolate hazelnut on top, then add some sliced bananas on top. Another choice would be half of a bagel, topped with Ricotta cheese, then topped with sliced strawberries. You could also add a drizzle of honey to take away the tartness. Learning how to snack healthy will improve your overall health.
Another simple, healthy snack would be to take some chick peas in a can and drain them. Mash them with a potato masher in a small bowl. Chop up some fresh garlic and add it to the bowl. Add some chopped green onions. Use carrot sticks for dipping into the Hummus.
Popcorn that has been air popped or microwaved is low in fat and filling. It also satisfies the salty, crunchy urge. Top it with various seasonings for different flavors.
If you would rather drink your snack, this is easy to make and will be nutritious and filling.
In a blender, mix ½ cup of almond or skim milk, ½ cup of plain greek yogurt, ½ cup of pomegranate juice, 3 large strawberries (fresh or frozen), and a medium sized banana. This will make a 24oz drink.
The trick is to get creative. Buy what you will eat and package it using small zipper bags. When you are off to work or running errands; grab it and go. Plan to take these healthy snacks will help you stay on track and stop you from grabbing fast food when hunger pains strike.
