How to Get Rid of Mold

Mold is harmful but there are things you can use to get rid of mold. Most of the solutions below can be done with things you already have in your home like bleach, vinegar and baking soda.

How to Get Rid of Mold

Use  Bleach- Bleach seems to be the one solution that people think of the most when it comes to killing mold. Special care must be taken when using bleach. To make a bleach solution, combine a gallon of water and a cup of bleach. It is important that you don’t mix it with anything that contains ammonia since this will produce a toxic gas. Spray the bleach solution on the affected area and allow to set for 5-10 minutes. Then, just scrub with a heavy duty brush and wipe with a clean, damp rag. Be sure to keep the room you are working in well-ventilated.

Use  Vinegar- Vinegar is a solution that is not toxic and will not harm the environment. It is definitely not as strong as bleach and you do need to use it straight without diluting it. You can use it by spraying vinegar on the affected area and allow to set for 10-15 minutes. Then, scrub the area with a heavy duty brush and wipe clean with a damp rag. The reason that vinegar works is because it is acidic, which breaks down and kills the structure of the mold.

Use Baking Soda- Baking soda is ideal for killing mold; it deodorizes and is also inexpensive. To make a baking soda solution, combine ½ cup of baking soda with a cup of water and a tablespoon of dish soap. This solution works on all surfaces but tends to work best on vinyl and tile. Spray the solution onto the moldy area and scrub with something that is semi-abrasive. Then, wipe with a clean, damp rag. Baking soda has a high PH so not only will it kill the mold but it will prevent it from growing back as well.
