How to Get Rid of Head Lice
Head lice is not something parents want to think about their child getting, but it does happen and it happens quite often. This is especially true if your child is in a daycare or school setting. The good news is that you can get rid of head lice with home remedies, over the counter medications and prescription treatments. Read further to learn how to get rid of head lice.
Head lice is most common in kids ages three to fifteen years of age. Lice easily spreads from person to person through contact with bedding, hair, clothing, brushes or combs. Head lice is usually noticed by your child itching their head or feeling like something is crawling on their head.
Vinegar– Vinegar is a lice treatment that is easy to use and effective as well. Vinegar contains a high amount of acetic acid, which can kill head lice. Also, vinegar assists in dissolving the nits. You can use this treatment twice a week. Just combine an equal amount of water and vinegar. Then, apply to hair that has just been shampooed. Allow to set for 15 minutes and rinse with warm water.
RID– RID is an over the counter lice treatment. Its active ingredient, pyrethrum, is derived from flowers that contain pyrethrins, a natural insecticide. Pyrethrins will attack the lice’s nervous systems. To use RID, you apply it to dry hair and allow to set for 10 minutes. Then, add water, form a lather, scrub and rinse with warm water. Then, use a lice comb to get rid of the nits.
Natroba– Natroba is a prescription medication that contains a natural insecticide called spinosad. This medication was approved for use in those ages four and older in January of 2011. To use Natroba, apply it to the scalp and work in the medication starting at the roots of the hair down to the ends. Allow to set for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. Then, comb for nits with a lice comb.
