It is believed that Gingerbread making made its way to Europe by means of an Armenian monk. Spices that he had brought from the Middle East went into making these delicious treats. Gregory the monk, brought his gingerbread making secrets and spices to Europe way back in the 10th century. He continued making these Christmas treats until his death.
Meanwhile, Gingerbread making made its rounds throughout Europe in the 13th century. During this time, gingerbread cookies were used by nuns to relieve digestion. The practice of painting the gingerbread also became in effect. Back then, people used to decorate windows with these sweet treats.
At one time, Gingerbread was sold in monasteries and pharmacies because of its comforting ways. William Shakespeare, the world famous poet and playwright once proclaimed, “And I had but one penny in the world, thou should’st have it to buy gingerbread.”
Gingerbread has long since become a Christmas tradition in many homes around the world.
