Five Eco-Friendly Ways to Keep Bugs Out of Your Garden

Most people garden for one of two reasons. Their passion for gardening or to grow their own produce. Whether your garden is your passion or your food supply, the one thing you don’t want in your garden is bugs! But, do you know what is worse than bugs? Chemicals, pesticides and other poisons. Nothing is worse than produce that contains a lot of harsh chemicals.

Before you buy any chemicals to keep the bugs away, check out my 5 Eco-Friendly tips.

1. Coffee Grounds! Using coffee grounds in your garden is a great way to keep out moles, gnats, snails and other pests. Coffee grounds also work as a fertilizer.

2. Crushed Egg Shells. Any bug that crawls likes a smooth route to your garden. Crushing up egg shells and laying them all over your garden bed will help keep out caterpillars and other insects out of your garden. Placing some of the crushed up egg shells right underneath the soil will also help prevent the bugs already in the dirt.

3. Garden Maintenance. Taking the time to maintain your garden can save you a lot of headaches with pests. Doing basic garden maintenance doesn’t have to be an all day affair, in fact it can be done in minutes. Removing dead leaves, keeping weeds under control and maintaining a rich soil will help you with pests.

4. Use Oils. Using peppermint essential oil is an eco-friendly way to keep ants, rodents and other bugs away. Spray some of the peppermint oil onto your plants and you should also put a few drops on a piece of cloth. Place pieces of cloth around the garden and you will be well on your way to a bug free garden.

5. Spices. A lot of people have good luck using spices like garlic, red pepper flakes, and cayenne pepper. Using these spices will help keep out a lot of different insects and rodents.

What has worked in your garden? Have you tried in eco-friendly ways to deter pests?
