Dealing with Teen Hormones
If your calm and loving teenager has suddenly turned into a raging child, you can blame hormones for their sudden change in behavior. They can go from an angel to a demon in 2.2 seconds flat. However, the good news is that there are some ways in which dealing with teen hormones will be most effective.
Know the Signs– Right before puberty hits and the hormones invade your child, they will hit a growth spurt. They will start growing fast and quickly begin to outgrow their clothing. When they hit puberty, you will definitely notice. Their new favorite words will be “I am bored” or “There is nothing to do here ever”.
Give Them Space– When puberty hits, teens will go after anyone in their path. So how do you handle these emotions? Allow them some time for themselves so they can relax and work through their emotions. When you notice emotions getting high, calmly tell your teen that they need to go to their room and calm down. It is important not to let other siblings bother them during this time in their room.
Take Advantage of Calm Moments– You will quickly learn that you cannot successfully reason with a moody teenager. However, the good news is that they wont be moody 100% of the time. They will have their good moments. It is best to wait and talk to your teen when they are not moody and emotional. Teach them some coping tools for handling their emotions. It is important they know how to control their actions with ways other than their moods.
Encourage Healthy Habits– Mood swings are not just caused by hormones. Emotions can get worse for anyone who is not eating right or not sleeping right. It is important that your teen is eating enough nuts, vegetables and fruit, drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep.
