Dealing with Cat Urine
Cats that urinate anywhere besides their litter boxes can make your entire home smell like one giant litter box. While it can be stressful and annoying, ignoring the situation or screaming at your cat will not make the problem disappear. You first need to address why the cat is peeing in the home before you can deal with getting rid of the smell of cat urine in your home.
One of the possible reasons that cats pee in the house (besides their litter box) is a medical concern. The most common medical conditions are kidney infection or bladder infection. You should take your feline to the vet to rule out a medical condition. Behavioral issues will also causes cats to urinate in the house. Behavioral issues can be triggered by things such as a new baby or pet in the home or a recent move. These events can cause a cat to feel threatened.
Another possible cause of peeing outside the litter box is the fact that their litter box is dirty. If your cat is not happy with the cleanliness of his or her litter box, they will suddenly refuse to use it. Cats are clean animals by nature and you may have one that is extremely picky about their litter box. It may not even be that the litter box is dirty but it could also be they don’t like the kind of cat litter that you use or they don’t like the location of where their litter box is placed.
There are a couple of solutions you can make at home to help with cleaning cat urine. You can make a vinegar solution or a citrus spray. It is important that you take the urine scent out of the home so that the cat can’t smell it and is less likely to keep peeing. For a vinegar solution, use a spray bottle with three parts of water and one part of vinegar. Blot up some of the cat urine and then spray the solution onto the urine soaked area and let it set for 10 minutes. Use paper towels to blot up the solution and allow the rest to dry. For the citrus solution, boil two cups of water on the stove and add in a cup of lemon and orange peels. Let it simmer for 20 minutes and allow to cool. Add to a spray bottle and use on the urine stain.
