Clutter Cleaning Tips for Pack Rats

If you are a pack rat, then you probably collect things, save things and store things. You save things in case you need them someday. You can’t give away things because your child may need them one day. The problem is that one day you are going to run out of room to put stuff. This means it is time to clean up, de-clutter and organize. Here are some clutter cleaning tips for pack rats.

Clutter Cleaning Tips for Pack Rats

Clean One Room At A Time- You may think that you have to tackle your whole house at once. However, this isn’t the way to do things since you will end up viewing your house as one large pile of clutter and you will become overwhelmed quickly. Instead, take one room at a time to clean. One good tip is to start with the room with the less clutter. This way, the task will be easier to complete and you will be motivated by a sense of accomplishment.

Dealing With Clothing Clutter- When it comes to clothes, there is a simple way to de-cluttering. For each piece of clothing, ask yourself if it even fits, does it fit your body shape and have you worn it in the past year. If you answered no to even one of those questions, you really need to ask yourself why you are keeping it.

Make Category Boxes- Pack rats really aren’t strangers when it comes to piles. You more than likely have piles of clothes, piles of papers, etc. It is now time to make some new piles instead. You will need four boxes, bins or containers. Label each of the four boxes: trash, put away, give away/sell and storage. Everything you have must go into one of these boxes. Once you have your hand on an item, put it in one of the boxes instead of trying to be decisive with it. Trash is rather self-explanatory, put away are items that you are keeping and belong in other areas of the house, give/sell is also self-explanatory and storage is items you want to keep but don’t use on a regular basis. Once you have the four boxes filled, empty the trash box. Keep the keep box for the next room (this will all be put away after all the rooms are done). Put the give/sell box where it is visible. The items you are giving away can be taken to the local Salvation Army or Goodwill and the items you are selling can be posted on eBay or Craigslist or you can even have a yard sale.
