Just wanted to share my thoughts about a book that I just recently read, entitled ” A Laird in Time” by Angeline Fortin. It is an excellent read for those who like to read historical fiction. This book is definitely a page turner and is filled with mystery, intrigue, lust, love and yes, even some magic. The main character of the book is Emmy MacKenzie, a young woman who has completed her schooling and has earned her degree as a OB/GYN in Baltimore and is highly acclaimed in her profession.
She has friends that have seemed to have found fulfillment in their lives, they often party together or go on trips to exotic lands in groups and Emmy feels that she has not found her calling as yet. She decides to take a break from her work and decides to book a trip to Scotland to visit some of the historical castles as she has an interest in architecture and history. She thought that this trip would give her some time to reflect on what she wants out of life. She decides on booking a ten day trip that takes her to several locations in the UK. Her last stop before heading back to the US and her job is to The Isle of Mull, Scotland. While here, she is looking forward to visiting Duart Castle and delve into the history of it and its ancestors.
After the other passengers left the shuttle, Donell, the aged shuttle bus driver and Emmy strike up a conversation about Duart Castle and its history. As the shuttle bus slows to a halt in front of the castle, Emmy exclaims, “it is just as amazing as you said”. Emmy steps off the shuttle bus to head into the castle for the last tour of the season, Donell also gets off the bus to stretch his legs for a minute. Emmy lifts her camera to take a picture of the crumbling castle and remarks, ” I bet it was really something a hundred years ago when it was first restored”. “Aye, it was” replies Donell. “But you wouldn’t have wanted to see it then.”
A little more conversation takes place between the two and Donell responds with this line, “Should be careful, lass, what you wish for.” And that is all that I am letting out of the bag. Definitely a thrill to read, with lots of twists and turns. Could not put this book down and highly recommend it. It contains 396 pages and it was done in a day.
