11 Great Choices for a Warm Weather Trek
San Diego
This city has the best average temperatures in the nation. Winter usually stays in the 60’s, but can sometimes reach a nice 70 degrees. Even with the temperate climate, winter is a fairly quiet time of year here. The San Diego Zoo is a must, and there are lots of beautiful beaches to explore. The Pacific does stay cold, so an ocean dip can be eye-opening!
New Orleans
Outside of Mardi Gras, winter in this city means lower hotel rates and fewer crowds. The Big Easy ranks high in polls for Christmas and New Year’s destinations. New Orleans is also known for great restaurants and cafes. There are many historical sites to visit in New Orleans. For sports fans, the first week in January has both the Sugar Bowl and the BCS National Championship games.
Honolulu
Who wouldn’t want to winter in Hawaii? This capital city offers great weather and tons of outdoor activities. You can catch a luau or swim with the dolphins. There are museums and aquariums to visit as well. Hiking and biking are popular on the island. You can even go on a submarine tour!
Houston
This city is in the Sunbelt and has highs in the 50s or 60s—just the right temperature for ice skating outdoors or outside concerts. If you should happen to visit in late February, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (the world’s biggest) is another venue you should check out. Winter is much better than the summer to visit and enjoy the city’s wonderful museums and classical music as well as its decadent burgers and Texas cuisine.
Miami
Miami’s tropical weather makes the Metrozoo stand out, with a wide variety of animals living there. You can visit Parrot Jungle Island to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. There are lots of beaches to relax and have fun in the sun. Miami has a great science museum and the Seaquarium is in the heart of tourist activities.
Charleston, SC
While not as warm as some other Southern cities, it still beats the winters up north. A little chill in the air may bring out your favorite scarf and sweater, but you can still enjoy outdoor activities and the quaint Southern atmosphere. Charleston is a walking city, whether it’s along the Battery or shopping on famous King Street. If you (or the kids) get tired, try the water taxi and get a totally different view of the city. Orlando, FL

San Antonio, TX
During the holiday season, thousands of luminarias and almost 2 million LED lights will line the famous Riverwalk, and the festivals continue throughout the winter—even including the annual draining and maintenance of the river in January, celebrated as the Mud Festival. San Antonio is a great value year round, has great food and terrific flea markets.
SSan Francisco
San Francisco stays quiet during winter, with the exception of a few conventions here and there. The temperature rarely dips below 50 during the daytime. Fewer crowds mean a more enjoyable visit to the galleries, restaurants and theaters. For the family, you can’t miss a cable car ride or visit Chinatown. You can shop on Pier 39, or just walk and watch the sea lions. There are several companies that rent bicycles and you can even go across the Golden Gate Bridge.
