What Do You Miss from Back in the Day?

What do you miss from back in the day? I miss things like Silly Putty, Etch-a-Sketch, Hula Hoop, Slinky and Klackers! Oh yeah, let’s not forget the thing a mah jig… I don’t even know what it is called.. it was a little plastic hoop that fit around your ankle. It had a piece of a skipping rope attached to it and a little plastic bell. I remember spending hours playing with that.

And, oh, let’s not forget the prices of things.. I remember that top of the line comics brand new were only .75 cents. There was a store that you could trade them in. Of course, this is after you read them so much the scenes were memorized. Then when you traded them in you could get .25 cents… or even get 3 slightly worn comics for the trade.

And the candy store .. where you could get 3 candies for a penny! Wow, twenty-five cents sure went a long way. If you happen to have a buck then you were a millionaire!

Oh, and Chatty Cathy. I still have her.. her voice a little strained and drained over the years. Every so often, I pull the string and hear…rrrrrr…Please comb my hair!

I remember everything about your post.

Except that I remember a bag of candies (they were thrown in loose) was 25 cents.

I saw one of those ankle thing-a-mah-jigs this week at the thrift shop (expect it was new from China, don’t make them like they used to).

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Am I old?

No don’t think you are old.. we got to pick out candies form the candy store at recess or lunchtime. The shopkeeper had a glass counter that had boxes of candy. Spearmint leaves were 3 for a penny, gum balls for 3 for a cent and the strawberry feet were 3 for a cent. Jawbreakers were a nickel. Straws were a cent, and the black licorice pipes were a nickel. Man, those were the days.

LOL sounds like our back in the day is the same back in the day. The first thing that popped into my mind was that thing a ma gig that you put around your ankle, but my had a strawberry at the end filled with sand.

My back in the day is the same as yours!! I had the thing you are talking about except with a lemon on the end and it was called a lemon twist. I was the joke of the high schoolers when I was in elementary school every morning after i got off the bus I would be out there skipping with my lemon twist lol. I miss recess time with big jump ropes that you had people on either end and you would jump with the rhymes. Or doing one potato, two potato, 3 potato 4… to figure out who was going to be ‘it’ when you play kick the can. 🙂
