Squirrel Appreciation Day is Jan 21st. Really how many of us appreciate squirrels? They are cute to look at from a distance but that is about it. Their antics can make you laugh. However, it quickly turns into a frown if you find out one of these cute things have chewed their way through your roof.
When we were kids or even have our own kids feeding the squirrels in the park is fun to do. I in fact have not planted very many vegetables in my backyard garden because these nuisances always seem to raid the vegetable patch.
Some fascinating facts about these rodents is the fact that there are 285 different species. I remember an encounter with a member of the Sciuridae family. I was in my teen years and was chasing a chipmunk along with a couple of other people. We blocked it from getting up the tree and seeing it was only a baby it was quite confused. So confused that it ran under my pant leg and scooted its way up to my buttocks and started to scratch.
What was a girl to do but shuck down those pants in broad daylight to let that creature out. I remember being so worried about whether I would have to get a needle. In spite of all of the commotion, I was not bit or bleeding. Just ended up a little red-faced that is all.
What is your take on squirrels… are they beneficial or a nuisance?
