Roots Day is Dec 23rd – Genealogy is an increasingly popular pastime for some people. Roots Day celebrates learning where your family comes from.  Learning the sources of the many customs and celebrations of your family is a fascinating topic to discover.

It is also a great way to open a conversation between families.  Kids and grandparents/great grandparents can share stories with each other. Sharing these stories with each other helps to keep memories alive. By learning about their past, it gives you insight into the lives that they lived which, in time you can pass along to your own children.

Many of the elders have first hand memories of living in other countries.  Sit down and listen to what they want to share about their past, you will be surprised at how interesting and challenging their early lives were. You could learn about their schooling, play time, work, disciplines, beliefs, and so much more.

If you happen to have children, they could celebrate Roots Day by learning about their friends customs and cultural heritage.
