Lavendar comes in several different species, actually more than 100 different types but the most common three are; English, Spanish and French Lavendar. It is a perennial herb/plant that comes up year after year. It is commonly used as an essential oil and potpourri and is also used in lotions and perfumes.

Young plants prefer shade and it is important that you cut back the flowers shoots in order for the plant to bush out more the next year. The most common color is purple, however, some varieties come in blue-lavendar, white and pink. English Lavendar has the strongest scent and is used for potpourri and other products that need a strong scent.

Lavendar has culinary uses as well. There are some varieties that can be used for grilling, added to salad dressings, or in a dessert.

It’s healing properties include herbal teas, relaxation therapy, sleep aid, aromatherapy, antiseptic, dandruff treatment, and can also be tossed into the dryer to add a lavendar scent to your clothes.

Lavendar can be found to grow wildly in some places. Country roadsides are a common place where it can be found. However, there are several regions/farms that cultivate Lavendar to sell as an ornamental plant, landscape design, or as lavendar essential oil. Lavendar also helps to keep away insects.

I, personally, have never tried it as a culinary additive. I imagine it would give a unique taste to some dishes as it is part of the mint family. However, I prefer to use it as a essential oil or aromatherapy technique. I remember as a young child my grandmother always having English lavendar in her home.

I love the scent, color and beauty of a lavendar plant. We used to have one in our back garden, but it gave up to the ghost many moons ago. Who knows maybe one day it will be replaced. Hope so!

I love the smell of lavender. I have never tried cooking with it but I have tasted lavender ice-cream and it was alright but not really a flavor I would seek out a second time.
