How to Go Green

Share

Everyone is concerned with our environment and how much they contribute to it. There are several small things we can all do to help, individually or as a group in your endeavours to go green. Here are just a few.

Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle

Plant a Garden

This is easy if you have the time and energy to plant and harvest. If you don’t, you can buy at a local farmers market and spend your money locally without all that packaging.

Save Energy

Exchange all the lightbulbs in the house for the CFLs, or in the ones you use the most often. When you have to replace appliances, choose brands with the “energy star” label.

Plastic

Shop with cloth bags. Re-use disposable bags or recycle. Recycle plastic water bottles, buy a reusable water bottle or best yet, install a water filter at our sink and don’t buy water at the store.

Laundry

Wash laundry in cold water instead of hot. Short cycles if possible. Research and make your own soaps and fresheners.

Driving

Drive the speed limit, and combine all your errands for the week in one trip. Better yet, walk or ride a bike to your errands that are two miles or closer.

Utilities

Research how you can conserve energy from your utility company. Some companies average your bill over the 12 months or have a “conserve energy program”. Maybe they can do an energy survey. Pay bills online, so easy and no stamps. Lower the temperature on your hot water heater. In the winter don’t heat the house when all are away for the day. Lower the temperature to 58 when you are gone, and turn it up to 68, when you are home. .

Paper

Reuse paper. Print on both sides or give the paper to kids for art work. Use your shredder and recycle. Share magazines. Donate to thrift stores, the library or local hospital.

Thrift Shopping

We all know about Craigslist and Ebay. Support your local thrift shops and charity organizations. Donate and/or shop. Some items are in very good condition.

What are you doing to help the environment?
