Cat Herders Day
Dec 15 is Cat Herders Day! So head to the store and grab a couple of cans of food and serve all the feral cats in your neighborhood a treat! They definitely will love your gesture. Cat Herders Day brings back some memories of when my children were smaller. A little ways up the street there was a person we called the cat lady. Well, she was one of them. She would come outside to tend to the cats which slept in two winterized pet units that were located on her front porch. She used to feed all of the feral cats on our street.
Two streets away from us there was a small bungalow with an elderly lady. She was definitely a cat herder. I think someone said at one time that she had over 100 cats. When my kids were smaller and we would take walks through the neighborhood, we would always stop over to see the two neighborhood cat ladies. They would talk to us for a while telling us how the animals were doing or their latest addition.
Both of these ladies were thought to be a little eccentric. Basically keeping to themselves, unless it had something to do with their cats welfare or a visitor. We got used to seeing the cats make a mad dash to the front door each time we stopped over. Out they would scatter to the outdoors for 20 minutes or so, getting some fresh air and getting into mischief as well. They never really strayed to far as they were used to the food and love they got from those two ladies.
When it was time for the cat’s to come in, each would get the cat food bowls, drop some food into the bowl, and then shake it. The cats used to come rushing home at breakneck speed. We used to laugh at their antics! Thankfully these ladies cared for and loved these feral cats that some of the neighbors frowned upon. Over time several of these cats found forever homes. To commemorate cat herders day, if you happen to have a neighborhood cat lady and can afford to be a little generous, offer some funds to go towards their care or purchase some toys and blankets.
It would be appreciated by the cat ladies and the cats as well!
