Bat Appreciation Day
April 17th is Bat Appreciation Day. It is a day to remember the bat and appreciate how it helps to control our mosquito population. Bats are nocturnal and often head out in the middle of the night for food. They are migratory creatures who fly hundreds of miles each year.
There is little truth in the adage “Blind as a bat”. They rely on sonar waves to help them navigate in the dark. In other words, they use sound to warn them of their surroundings as well as how to travel from point a to point b without fail.
I did have an encounter with them when I was younger, we were on a canoe trip and out on the lake late at night. We had a swarm of them around us and quickly grabbed anything to put on our heads to protect our long hair, lest they become entangled in it.
Definitely prefer snakes over bat’s any day. How about you?
