Sitting off the coast of Thailand is the well kept secret of Nangyuan Island, a destination that is only fifteen minutes from its larger island counterpart, is more like a world apart. Connected by a series of sandbars that serve as secluded beaches, Nangyuan is both retreat and adventure ride. The popular Dive Center is the place to find a guide and a boat for scuba diving, the beaches are quiet, clean and very unpopulated and there are some incredibly relaxing resorts and retreat destinations on the island. No cars are on the island so you will have to get here by private boat, or walk across the sandbars.
Vieques, Puerto Rico
While Puerto RIco is a Caribbean destination that a lot of travelers are familiar with, Vieques is a remote island just off the coast of the mainland that has gone undeveloped for the most part. Once a military base for the United States, Vieques is popular for its bioluminescent waters that light up at night when anything touches the microscopic animals that float on the surface of the ocean. While it can sometimes feel like you have the entire island to yourself, there are several luxury to relatively budget friendly resorts that operate all over over the island.
Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos
Another Caribbean destination, Turks and Caicos is sometimes thought of as the playground for the rich and famous. Salt Cay is a standout though because of its natural wildlife and all the research groups that head here to study. Porto Santo, Portugal
Madeira is the well known island destination of Portugal, but its the nearby Porto Santo that is worth visiting. Not only does Porto Santo have the beaches that Madeira lacks, its essentially cut off from the rest of the world except by plane or boat. That plane ride is a mere fifteen minutes though, so you can easily hop back and forth from remote island paradise to hopping island city. Known as the Golden Island, Porto Santo is a winter haven on account of the warm waters that rush pass it compliments of the Gulf Stream. Porquerolles, France
Part of the Azure Coast, Porquerolles is one of three islands that make up this small chain, but also the best suited for travel. The Island is part of Port-Cros National Park, which includes one of the three islands in its entirety, so there are several undeveloped beaches and plenty of coastline to explore. The village square is surrounded by authentic restaurants, small shops and family run hotels. Rent a bicycle to be able to see more of the island during your stay, but don’t forget to talk to the locals, who are full of stories about all the folks that have come before you.
